Forensic Case Studies

Floor Cupping

TREC opened up two (2) areas of Bamboo flooring on the first level, approximately 12” x 18” in size, to inspect the wood flooring, adhesive, subfloor sheathing and overall installation methodology. The buckling area near the kitchen island was opened first and it was observed that at the apex of the buckling, the adhesive had been switched from Mapei Ultrabond ECO 995 to Bostik Seal-N-Grip. “Alligatoring” of the adhesive was observed. The second area opened also evidenced “aligatoring” and “face checking”. Upon inspection, the 2.5% - 3% average moisture differential that existed between the Bamboo flooring and the subfloor sheathing is still slightly higher than the 2% maximum difference recommended by the Bamboo wood manufacturer.
